Crème de la Prem
Using pop culture as a vehicle to dissect the EPL.
Football is the most watched sport in the world, and the English Premier League (EPL) has the strongest caliber of footballers in the world. IMO, it’s the best league to watch. It’s also the richest league, with the most capital and resources. In the 2021-22 season alone, EPL clubs made more money than the Bundesliga (German clubs) and La Liga (Italian clubs) combined. That number has even more zeroes after it now.
Where my girls at?
Wealth and resources notwithstanding, the EPL doesn’t attract women. I say this from experience — any camera panning around the stadiums on game day will tell you the same — and the data backs me up. Men are twice as likely as women to be Premier League fans. A 2015 Premier Skills English - British Council article found that women accounted for just 19% of EPL game attendees, a number they touted as “progress.”
Make it make sense
There are a bazillion sports blogs out there — everything from fan-centric websites to top-tier journalists who are covering the minutiae of the game — but few platforms specifically for women. And so, this blog is my passion project. I hope that by using pop culture as a vehicle to dissect the EPL and make it accessible for women and girls, more of us might tune in to watch the world’s most beautiful game.
